What Is ETF Overlap and How Much Is Too Much?

Learn what ETF overlap means, how weighted overlap is calculated, when overlap becomes meaningful, and how to check whether multiple ETFs are actually diversifying your portfolio.

Owning several ETFs can make a portfolio look diversified.

But different fund names do not always mean different investments.

Two ETFs may hold many of the same stocks, and they may put large weights in the same companies. When that happens, adding the second ETF may increase exposure to positions you already own rather than create as much diversification as you expected.

That is ETF overlap.

A useful way to think about it is:

The important word is underlying.

If one ETF holds Apple at 7% and another holds Apple at 4%, your portfolio owns Apple through both funds even though the ETF tickers are different.

Understanding overlap helps answer a practical portfolio question:

What Does ETF Overlap Mean?

ETF overlap occurs when two funds own some of the same securities.

Suppose ETF A contains:

The funds overlap in Company A and Company B.

But simply counting two shared stocks does not tell you how important that overlap is.

The weights matter.

A shared holding that represents 10% of each fund matters much more than a shared holding that represents 0.05%.

That is why weighted overlap is usually more informative than a simple shared-holdings count.

How Weighted ETF Overlap Is Calculated

One transparent method is to add the smaller weight for every security held by both ETFs.

For each shared holding:

Shared weight
= min(Weight in ETF A, Weight in ETF B)

Then:

Weighted overlap
= Sum of shared weights

Suppose:

Company A:
ETF A = 10%
ETF B = 7%

Shared weight = 7%

And:

Company B:
ETF A = 8%
ETF B = 4%

Shared weight = 4%

If these are the only shared holdings:

Weighted overlap
= 7% + 4%
= 11%

So the two ETFs have 11% weighted overlap under this method.

Shared Holdings Count vs Weighted Overlap

These are different metrics.

Imagine two ETFs share 50 stocks.

That sounds like a lot.

But suppose all 50 positions are tiny and together account for only 6% of each portfolio.

The overlap may be less important than another pair of ETFs that shares only 10 stocks but puts 45% of fund weight into those same companies.

For portfolio construction, the second question is usually more useful.

Is ETF Overlap Bad?

Not automatically.

Overlap is a portfolio characteristic, not a verdict.

There are many situations where investors may intentionally own overlapping funds.

For example, someone might hold a broad-market ETF and add a growth ETF because they deliberately want more exposure to large growth companies.

In that case, overlap is not necessarily a mistake.

The problem occurs when the overlap is unintentional.

You may believe that you have added diversification when you have actually increased exposure to the same stocks, sectors, or investment style.

So a better question is not:

> Is overlap bad?

It is:

> Does the overlap match the reason I own both funds?

How Much ETF Overlap Is Too Much?

There is no universal percentage at which ETF overlap suddenly becomes "too much."

The answer depends on:

  • why you own each ETF;
  • the role each fund plays;
  • your target asset allocation;
  • sector concentration;
  • the size of each ETF position;
  • whether the overlap is intentional;
  • how much unique exposure each fund adds.

A practical way to interpret weighted overlap is to use broad diagnostic ranges rather than hard rules.

These are not investment rules.

A 45% overlap could be perfectly intentional in one portfolio and unnecessary duplication in another.

The percentage should trigger a closer look, not an automatic buy-or-sell decision.

Why 50% Overlap Does Not Mean Half Your Portfolio Is Duplicated

This is an important distinction.

An ETF-pair overlap percentage describes the similarity between the two funds.

Your actual portfolio exposure also depends on how much money you put into each fund.

Suppose:

ETF A allocation = 50% of portfolio
ETF B allocation = 10% of portfolio
ETF overlap = 50%

That does not mean 50% of your entire portfolio is duplicated.

ETF B is only 10% of the portfolio.

The impact of the overlap must be scaled by your actual allocation.

Pairwise overlap is a diagnostic tool. Portfolio-level exposure requires another layer of calculation.

Example: Varying Portfolio Weights Change the Impact

Assume two hypothetical ETFs have 60% weighted overlap.

Portfolio 1

ETF A = 50%
ETF B = 50%

The overlap matters a lot because the entire portfolio is built from these two funds.

Portfolio 2

ETF A = 45%
ETF B = 5%
Other assets = 50%

The same 60% pairwise overlap has a much smaller impact because ETF B is only a small portfolio position.

This is why ETF overlap should be evaluated together with portfolio weights.

Broad-Market ETFs Can Overlap Heavily

Many broad-market ETFs track indexes with similar universes.

For example, two U.S. large-cap index funds may both own many of the same mega-cap companies.

Likewise, a total U.S. market ETF and an S&P 500 ETF can share substantial exposure because large companies represent a significant part of the total market.

Owning both does not necessarily double your diversification.

Instead, it may tilt the portfolio more heavily toward the companies that appear in both.

Broad-Market ETF + Growth ETF

This is another common source of overlap.

Suppose you hold:

  • a broad U.S. market ETF;
  • a large-cap growth ETF.

The growth ETF may contain many of the same large technology and communication-services companies already present in the broad-market ETF.

What changes is often the weight.

You are not necessarily adding entirely new companies.

You may be increasing the portfolio's exposure to a particular style.

That can be intentional—but it should be visible.

S&P 500 ETF + Nasdaq-100 ETF

This combination often looks like two different market exposures because the indexes have different names and methodologies.

But many large companies can appear in both.

The Nasdaq-100 fund may simply place much greater weight on a subset of mega-cap growth companies already owned through the S&P 500 fund.

The real portfolio question becomes:

> Do I want additional concentration in those shared companies?

That is more useful than simply asking whether the two ETFs are "different."

Sector ETFs Can Increase Hidden Concentration

Suppose you already own a broad-market ETF and then add a technology ETF.

The technology ETF may not add much new exposure to the portfolio's largest technology companies.

Instead, it can amplify positions you already own indirectly.

For example:

Broad-market ETF
→ already owns Company A, B, C

Technology ETF
→ also owns Company A, B, C at larger weights

Your number of ETF tickers increases.

Your true diversification may not increase by the same amount.

ETF Overlap Is Not the Same as Correlation

Two ETFs can have low holdings overlap and still move similarly.

For example, two funds may hold different companies in the same industry.

Their actual securities are different, but both may respond strongly to the same:

  • interest-rate changes;
  • oil prices;
  • semiconductor cycle;
  • housing market;
  • consumer demand;
  • currency movements.

Conversely, two ETFs can share some holdings but still behave differently because the rest of their portfolios are very different.

So:

Overlap measures shared portfolio composition.

Correlation measures how returns move relative to each other.

Both can matter, but they answer different questions.

ETF Overlap Is Not the Same as Sector Overlap

Two funds can have little exact security overlap but still be concentrated in the same sector.

For example:

mostly U.S. semiconductor companies

ETF B:
mostly international semiconductor companies

The exact holdings may be different.

But both funds depend heavily on the semiconductor industry.

A complete diversification review therefore looks at more than shared ticker symbols.

  • sector exposure;

  • factor exposure;

Why Top Holdings Matter

A pair of ETFs may have dozens of shared securities, but most of the practical overlap may come from a small number of large positions.

Suppose five shared companies contribute:

The remaining shared holdings may each contribute very little.

This is why a useful ETF overlap analysis should show not only one headline percentage, but also which securities create that overlap.

Unique Exposure Matters Too

Overlap tells you what two funds share.

But another useful question is:

> What does each ETF add that the other does not?

Suppose two funds have 40% weighted overlap.

That still leaves substantial exposure that is not shared.

One ETF may provide:

  • smaller companies;
  • international stocks;
  • value stocks;
  • a different sector mix;
  • different weighting methodology.

Looking only at overlap can make two funds appear more similar than they really are.

A good comparison should examine both:

Data Date Matters

ETF holdings change.

Indexes rebalance.

Funds receive inflows and outflows.

Companies enter and leave indexes.

Corporate actions occur.

That means an overlap result should always be tied to a holdings snapshot.

If ETF A uses holdings from one date and ETF B uses a very different date, the comparison can become misleading.

When reviewing an ETF overlap result, check:

  • holdings date;
  • data source;
  • whether both funds use comparable snapshots;
  • coverage of recognized securities;
  • whether unresolved holdings exist.

Why Coverage Matters

Suppose a data source can resolve only 80% of a fund's holdings by portfolio weight.

If the remaining 20% cannot be matched reliably, silently redistributing that weight would make the result look more precise than the underlying data supports.

A transparent comparison should keep unresolved exposure visible.

That allows you to distinguish between:

  • "these funds have low overlap";
  • and "the system does not yet have enough resolved data to measure the remaining exposure."

Those are very different conclusions.

Number of ETFs Is Not the Same as Diversification

A portfolio with 10 ETFs is not automatically more diversified than one with three.

Consider a portfolio containing several funds focused on:

  • S&P 500;
  • U.S. growth;
  • Nasdaq-100;
  • technology;
  • semiconductors.

The portfolio has five ETF tickers.

But the largest underlying companies may appear again and again.

By contrast, a smaller number of funds covering genuinely different assets or market segments may create broader exposure.

Diversification should be evaluated at the underlying exposure level, not simply by counting fund names.

A Simple ETF Overlap Review

When comparing two ETFs, work through these questions.

1. How Much Weighted Overlap Is There?

Start with the headline number.

Is it 10%, 30%, 60%, or 90%?

The higher it is, the more important it becomes to understand why both funds are in the portfolio.

2. Which Holdings Create the Overlap?

Look at the largest shared positions.

A 40% overlap dominated by a few mega-cap stocks tells a different story from a 40% overlap spread evenly across hundreds of holdings.

3. What Unique Exposure Does Each Fund Add?

A second ETF can still be useful even with substantial overlap if its non-overlapping holdings serve a clear purpose.

4. What Are the Actual Portfolio Weights?

A 60% overlap matters differently when the second ETF is 5% of your portfolio versus 40%.

5. Is the Duplication Intentional?

If you deliberately want a growth or sector tilt, duplication may be part of the design.

If you expected the second ETF to diversify the portfolio, high overlap deserves more scrutiny.

6. Are There Other Concentration Risks?

Check sector, country, market-cap, and factor concentration too.

Holdings overlap is only one dimension.

Example: Is 70% ETF Overlap Too Much?

Suppose two ETFs have 70% weighted overlap.

That is high enough to ask why you own both.

But it does not automatically mean one must be sold.

Situation A: Unintentional Duplication

You bought ETF B because you thought it would materially diversify ETF A.

A 70% overlap suggests it may not be doing what you expected.

Situation B: Intentional Tilt

You own ETF A as a core holding and ETF B specifically to overweight a set of companies already present in ETF A.

A 20% overlap is relatively limited under a pairwise weighted measure.

But it still does not guarantee broad diversification.

The remaining 80% could be concentrated in:

  • one sector;
  • one country;
  • small-cap growth;
  • commodities;
  • a single factor.

Low exact holdings overlap is useful information, but it is not a complete risk assessment.

When Should You Check ETF Overlap?

Useful times include:

  • before adding a new ETF;
  • after adding a sector or thematic fund;
  • when simplifying a portfolio;
  • during periodic rebalancing;
  • after changing a core ETF;
  • when several funds appear to own the same top stocks;
  • when your portfolio feels diversified by ticker count but concentrated in practice.

You do not need to react every time the percentage changes slightly.

The goal is to understand the structure of the portfolio.

How to Reduce Unwanted ETF Overlap

If the overlap is higher than intended, possible portfolio-design options include:

Replace Similar Funds

If two ETFs serve almost the same role, one may be unnecessary.

Use a More Complementary Fund

Instead of adding another large-cap U.S. fund, you might look for exposure to a genuinely different part of the market—if that fits your investment plan.

Reduce the Satellite Position

If one ETF is the core and another creates a deliberate tilt, adjusting the size of the satellite allocation can reduce concentration without removing it entirely.

Review the Entire Portfolio

Pairwise ETF overlap is only one layer.

A fund that looks unique relative to ETF A may overlap heavily with ETF C.

For portfolios with several ETFs, look-through analysis across all positions is more useful than judging each pair independently.

Before keeping or adding two ETFs, ask:

  • What role does each fund play?
  • What is their weighted overlap?
  • Which shared holdings drive the number?
  • What unique exposure does each fund provide?
  • How large is each fund in my actual portfolio?
  • Am I intentionally overweighting the shared holdings?
  • Are both holdings snapshots current and comparable?
  • Are there unresolved holdings in the data?
  • Do the funds share sector or factor exposure even when exact holdings differ?
  • Would removing one materially change my portfolio exposure?

If you cannot explain why both funds are there, the overlap analysis has probably surfaced something worth reviewing.
