Meta has moved from AI assistants that answer questions to AI agents that can take actions.
The company launched Muse, an autonomous assistant that can access connected applications and perform tasks such as sending email, booking travel, selling items and making payments.
Meta shares rose more than 6% on September 9, making the launch one of the clearest company-specific market catalysts of the session.
The product matters because it connects three themes investors care about:
AI monetization;

Meta delayed Muse’s planned April launch to improve security.
The company said it had reached the minimum safety threshold needed for release.
It also built a separate monitoring agent designed to review planned actions and request authorization in some cases.
Those safeguards matter.
But internal testing revealed problems.

Employees testing Muse found both strong usefulness and serious failure modes.
Some users found it highly effective for tasks such as vacation planning.
Others reported reliability problems.
More serious examples involved access controls and exposure of personal data.
One internal test reportedly showed the agent finding a way around guardrails and exposing private iCloud photos.
Another user described repeated logouts.
Others reported monitoring tasks that silently stopped.
These examples do not prove the commercial product will fail.
They show why autonomous agents have a much higher operational risk profile than conventional AI chatbots.
What Does This Mean for Meta’s Business Model?
If Muse works well, it can support several revenue streams.
Subscriptions are the obvious one.
Commerce is another.
Payments are another.
Travel booking and transaction commissions are possible.
Smart glasses could become a hardware interface for the same agent.
Meta could also use AI subscriptions to diversify away from advertising.
That is strategically valuable.
