Why Is SELLAS Life Sciences Stock Surging? The High-Risk REGAL Trial Bet Explained

SELLAS stock is attracting traders ahead of its Phase 3 REGAL trial readout. Here's what is confirmed, what remains speculation and the risks for SLS.

Educational analysis · Not investment advice

SELLAS Life Sciences has become one of the more unusual biotech trades of 2026.

Shares of the small oncology company have attracted growing attention as investors wait for the final analysis of its Phase 3 REGAL study.

At the same time, SLS has started appearing much more frequently on Reddit and other retail-investor communities.

That combination—an approaching binary clinical catalyst, rapid price appreciation and social-media speculation—has created exactly the kind of situation where investors need to separate confirmed information from rumor.

The most important fact: SELLAS has not announced the 80th event

REGAL is evaluating galinpepimut-S, or GPS, in patients with acute myeloid leukemia who achieved complete remission following second-line salvage therapy.

The study is event-driven.

Its final analysis is triggered when the trial reaches a prespecified 80th event, defined as a death in the study population.

As of May 11, SELLAS said 78 events had occurred. ()

In its August 11 second-quarter update, the company again said final analysis would occur following the 80th event, but it did not announce that the threshold had been reached.

That distinction is critical.

Recent online speculation has claimed that the 80th event may already have occurred.

SELLAS has not confirmed that claim.

Stocktwits reported that a separate German report had fueled the speculation while emphasizing that the company's latest official disclosure had not confirmed the milestone. ()

Until SELLAS publishes an update, investors should treat any claim that REGAL has officially reached 80 events as unverified.

Why are investors so focused on 80 events?

Once the threshold is reached, the process moves toward database lock, statistical analysis, unblinding and disclosure of topline results.

That makes the event important—but it does not tell investors whether the trial succeeded.

In fact, SELLAS remains blinded to the outcome until the appropriate analysis process is completed. ()

The distinction is easy to miss.

Reaching 80 events means the trial can move toward its final analysis.

It is not itself positive efficacy data.

Why has the waiting period attracted so much speculation?

Because REGAL is event-driven, investors have spent months trying to interpret the slow accumulation of deaths in the study.

Some bullish investors argue that slower-than-expected events could indicate patients are living longer.

That interpretation is possible—but it cannot be established from the blinded event count alone.

Patient outcomes in oncology studies can be affected by multiple variables, and outsiders do not know how events are distributed between treatment groups until the trial is unblinded.

That makes attempts to infer final efficacy from the timing of events inherently speculative.

Reddit interest has exploded

The social signal is nevertheless real.

A WallStreetBets post published on August 23 showing a trader turning roughly $48,000 into more than $600,000 through SLS options attracted around 1,500 votes and substantial discussion.

The trader also disclosed a large position in SLS shares and additional call options. ()

Dedicated SELLAS communities are also highly active, with daily discussion threads centered around the approaching REGAL catalyst. ()

This attention can amplify volatility.

It does not provide additional clinical evidence.

That difference matters enormously in biotech.

SELLAS has more than one asset

REGAL is not the company's only program.

SELLAS is also developing SLS009, a selective CDK9 inhibitor, in acute myeloid leukemia.

As of the August 11 update, 28 patients had been enrolled in a Phase 2 first-line AML study, with topline data expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The company also reported $138.3 million in cash and cash equivalents as of June 30, giving it a larger financial cushion than many small pre-revenue biotechnology companies approaching a major readout.

Those assets matter because they mean SELLAS is not purely a one-study company.

But in the near term, REGAL remains overwhelmingly important to the stock.

Why SLS is a genuine binary-catalyst trade

A successful REGAL result could materially change SELLAS's prospects.

Management has said that positive results could support a potential Biologics License Application to the FDA. ()

Failure would create the opposite situation.

Small biotechnology companies can lose a large portion of their market value in a single session when pivotal trials fail.

Options can be even more vulnerable because implied volatility often becomes extremely elevated ahead of a binary catalyst.

That is why SLS should not be analyzed like a conventional growth stock.

The critical question is not whether its recent chart looks strong.

It is whether GPS demonstrates sufficient clinical benefit when the trial is finally unblinded.

What investors should watch

The next legitimate milestone is simple:

an official SELLAS announcement regarding the 80th REGAL event and subsequent topline-data process.

Until that happens, speculation about whether the event has already occurred remains speculation.

After that, attention shifts completely to efficacy.

That makes SLS one of the most interesting biotech stories currently circulating among retail traders—but also one of the highest-risk.

The social-media momentum is real.

The Phase 3 catalyst is real.

The result is still unknown.

And in a binary biotech trade, that final distinction matters more than everything else.
